Beginners Taster Sessions
Thank you for expressing an interest on our club! We have answered the most common questions below, but please don’t hesitate to ask if we’ve missed any.
New members are always welcome to join us. You do not need to join until you have had 3 of our come and try it sessions. You do not need anything but a set of old clothes, the ability to swim and a keen sense of fun. The ‘Come & Try It’ sessions are only at the Lake (our Home Waters), unfortunately we are unable to offer these at the swimming pool sessions.
Our regular meetings are on our lake at Stoney Stanton, there’s a map at the bottom of the ’Home Waters’ page.
What you will learn?
We have a team of Coaches who will begin with basic safety and confidence in the water. They will then guide you through the necessary progression of strokes which will take you onto moving water. We teach through structured sessions and games, using British Canoe Union guidelines. Members are grouped each week according to their needs and a Coach is assigned to each group. The Club has both Male and Female Coaches.
What do you need to wear?
It’s not essential to have all of the gear to begin with but if you have a wetsuit, wear it! You are going to get wet, right through to your underwear, Lots of layers will be best – fleeces, tracksuit bottoms, old trainers and an old waterproof coat. They won’t keep you dry but they will help to keep you warm. We will provide you with a buoyancy aid and we do have some suitable clothing for hire. Don’t forget a spare set of dry clothes for when you finish!
How much does it cost to join?
If you’ve tried our taster sessions and want to join the club, see our ‘Membership‘ page for an up to date list of Membership fees.
Are there changing facilities?
Yes but they are limited. There is a small changing room you can change in, which also has a toilet and shower too. But in this sport you have to get used to changing in all sorts of strange places!
Can children come?
Yes, but parents of children under 16 must accompany them. They don’t have to be on the water but they do need to be present throughout the entire session. This is for insurance purposes.
What do I do next?
Just turn up at one of our sessions!
As the season progresses we may have to operate a booking system, but we usually manage to accommodate newcomers. Ask for any of the Coaches and we’ll show you what to do. You are also welcome to come along just to meet us and see what we do – don’t feel obliged to get onto the water during your first visit.
If you join you will receive we recommend that you join our facebook page which will give you updates on all of our trips.
To join come down to the lake or contact the Membership Secretary using our ‘Contact‘ page.
