Rutland Inland Sea Kayaking Trip 21/04/2018

Paddlers – HCC Dave Clarke, Martin Stretton, Richard Mathews, Ian Jennings, Nicola Basforth, Dave Priest, Neil Everal.

Rutland Canoe Club: Peta, Andy Seager, Kev and a couple of ex HCC members Russel and Cheryl (wondered where they disappeared to).

Meet point was on the North shore Whitwell car park at 9:30. Shortly after arriving we were met by Peta, trip leader for Rutland Canoe Club. Weather was very sunny with light winds and pretty flat water conditions. After sorting out the loan boats from the club and applying plenty of sun cream we were briefed on the lake rules by Peta and Andy. We were soon on the water where we spend 10-15 minutes getting used to the sea kayaks.

Setting off from the North shore to the centre tower then turning right down the North leg of the lake.

This gave us opportunity to practice cross winds and running with the wind.

We then turned right and found a suitable spot on the North Shore for a tea break.

Heading back to the main tower we turned south heading to Normanton Church trying to avoid the racing sail boats, after visiting the Church (from the outside) and having the obligatory photos.

We set off North back to the start point, total trip length 7 miles, amazing day out, fantastic scenery and very well worth revisiting.

After the trip four of us had made plans to cycle around the Lake (Dave, Ian, Richard and I), I hadn’t cycled for 15 years so I just went for the 17 mile route, whilst they did the 25 mile route, surprised myself really, didn’t think I would make it!!!

Trip report by Martin Stretton.
